I don’t wear leggings often because I usually prefer dressier clothes. However, I do find them a great option for casual outings and holidays.
Many people ask me if women over 40 can still wear leggings. The short answer is yes, absolutely, as long as you follow a few guidelines. The main rule is to never wear leggings as pants. Always pair them with a longer top. This approach makes the leggings look more like skinny jeans and provides a great backdrop for a special tunic or top.
I particularly like wearing leggings with asymmetrical tops because they add some visual interest and create flattering vertical lines. You might recognize this asymmetrical vest, which can be worn both open and closed. I previously showed it in a gray winter version styled in several ways. I also wore the vest with a belt.
The summer version of this vest is equally fantastic and perfect for hot weather. It can be worn on its own, as an extra layer, or even with a hoodie.
I also find knee-high leggings ideal for holidays. They are easy to wear and look great with long tunics, like this black and white one from Sancerre. The three buttons at the knees make these leggings stand out. Knee-high leggings with a bit of ruching at the knees are especially flattering, as they don’t overly emphasize the knee’s shape. These leggings are made from medium-thick, very comfortable cotton, and I highly recommend them.
Both pairs of leggings looked great with my old, comfy sandals. The sandals add just enough style to keep the outfits from looking too plain. These outfits were perfect for exploring Sri Lanka.
