A Cinematic Ode to Timeless Elegance – The Advanced Style Film Review

Many of you are probably familiar with the blog Advanced Style, where Ari Seth Cohen showcases stunning photos of women over 50 looking absolutely fabulous. Some of these women are much older, and they each have a vibrant zest for life. The blog’s incredible success comes from the inspiration these women provide, showing that life definitely doesn’t end at 60. In fact, many of them seem to be living their best years now.

Fashion and style are significant aspects of their lives. They find joy in dressing up and expressing their unique personalities to the world. Back in 2012, the Advanced Style book was published, and now, there’s even a movie, set to debut in New York on September 26.

I had the chance to preview the film and write a review for you. If you’re a regular reader of the Advanced Style blog, you’ll recognize many of its main characters. What’s special about the documentary is that it lets you connect with them on a deeper level. You get to see their style, understand their unique characters, and appreciate them even more.

Ilona Royce Smithkin (91)
Ilona is a lively redhead with orange eyelashes and a heart of gold. At 91, she’s still giving art workshops and performing on stage. She’s happy with everything she’s accomplished and is content with every moment she has left. Ilona stays as active as her body allows.

Jacquie Tajah Murdoch (84)
Jacquie, who grew up in Harlem, is known for her long career as a dancer, especially at The Apollo Theatre. She’s a fascinating character with a rich history, recently featured in a Lanvin campaign.

Debra Rapoport (69)
Debra is a textile designer and visual artist who refers to herself as a “manipulator of materials.” Her work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Debra believes you’re never too old to dress up and be creative. She is truly a free spirit and incredibly inspiring.

Joyce Carpati (82)
Joyce is the epitome of chic. She splits her time between Paris and New York and still works as a beauty consultant. Formerly an opera singer and marketing manager at Hearst Magazines, Joyce never leaves the house unless she feels she looks presentable. She loves clothes and maintains amazing skin.

Zelda Kaplan (1916 – 2012)
Zelda was a fashion icon for the last 40 years of her life. Even in her interview, she looked poised and stylish. Sadly, she passed away suddenly while sitting front row at a fashion show, and her story is deeply moving.

Lynn Dell (81)
Lynn, the energetic owner of “Off Broadway,” is known for her candidness. She focuses on timeless aspects of womanhood, bypassing fleeting trends to create designs for women over 50. She created the “One Size Fits All Collection,” advocating for confidence in all women, regardless of their size or age.

Tziporah Salamon (64)
One of my favorite characters is the endearing Tziporah, who dreams of finding love. She’s a stylist, performance artist, model, and legendary fashion icon. Tziporah transforms dressing into an art form and still teaches her “Art of Dressing” seminars in various cities.

These extraordinary women share their style wisdom in the film, offering lessons that will move and inspire you. It will certainly make you feel less anxious about aging and might even boost your confidence in expressing your style.

You can watch the movie digitally on iTunes and on demand. The Advanced Style DVD is also available on Amazon.
