For the second year in a row, I’ve been nominated as one of the top 10 fashion bloggers in Singapore. For the competition, we were asked to write about our style icons from the sixties. While I could have easily written about enduring icons like Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe, they’ve already been featured on the site before.
Instead, I decided to focus on a style icon who’s still influential today: Catherine Deneuve. In March 2013, she was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over 50s by the Guardian, coming in at number 12. Other icons such as Helen Mirren and Tilda Swinton also made the list.
Catherine Deneuve, born on October 22, 1943, is a celebrated French actress known for her roles in films like “Repulsion” (1965) and “Belle de Jour” (1967). She even earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 1993 for her role in “Indochine.” Her personal life includes several relationships and two brief marriages, which might explain her rather cynical views on marriage.
She is especially famous for being the muse of legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent. They met on the set of Luis Buñuel’s film “Belle de Jour” in 1966 and forged a lifelong friendship, collaborating on numerous projects. The clothes from their first collaboration remain iconic even today.
Catherine Deneuve continues to be a prominent figure at fashion shows and movie premieres. Her latest film is the 2011 musical “Les Bien-aimés,” in which she stars alongside her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni. The fashion of the sixties remains a significant influence, and Deneuve’s enduring style and elegance at 69 continue to inspire.
