Crafting a Wardrobe That Perfectly Mirrors Your Unique Style

In my ongoing series about wardrobe planning, we’ve already covered the basics and talked about creating a wardrobe capsule. But how do you actually plan a wardrobe that you truly love? The key is understanding your personal style that reflects who you are.

I’ve discussed various aspects of defining and discovering your style in the past—like figuring out your signature look and your style statement. Recently, I took an online course that integrated personality into style, and I can’t wait to share more about it. But for now, let me tell you about my experience with the style statement book.

Uncovering Your Style with the Style Statement

I recently completed the style statement process and here are my thoughts. To start, a style statement condenses your personality and passions into two words that express you completely. The process involves answering many personal questions that help pinpoint your core traits.

As you answer these questions, you’ll notice recurring words and patterns. After finishing, review your answers and jot down the words that stand out or resonate most. Then, look for synonyms for these words. Eventually, you’ll select two words that form your style statement.

Here’s how the book describes it: the first word represents your foundational essence, while the second word reflects your creative edge, connected to your external image. It’s like your foundation word is your wardrobe basics and the creative edge is your accessories. The 80/20 rule applies, meaning 80% of your outcome comes from 20% of your efforts.

My Style Statement

Although nothing stood out dramatically for me, the word “modern” seemed the closest fit, though I also liked “contemporary,” “design,” and “genuine.” According to the book, a “Modern” person is idealistic and visionary, attuned to what’s effective across generations and cultures, and values timeless concepts. They strive to be in style and can be a bit obsessed with staying current.

The look and feel of “Modern” include avant-garde, clean, streamlined styles with more negative space. Although this doesn’t fully match how I dress now, your style words can represent your aspirations or potential.

In terms of my creative edge, the word “freedom” resonates with me deeply. It signifies expressing myself freely, making my own choices, and feeling comfortable without restrictions.

So, my style statement is “Modern Freedom.” While it’s new to me, I’m curious to see how this aligns with my life and style. I’m also exploring another analysis, adding layers to my understanding of my style.
