A Fresh Take on Staying Youthful: Book Review

Since I write about style and fashion for women over 40 every day, I’m eager to gather as many opinions as possible on the subject.

I recently borrowed a book from a friend titled “How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Pounds Lighter, and 10 Times Better” by Charla Krupp. Charla Krupp is a former beauty director of InStyle magazine and has appeared on shows like the Today Show, Oprah Winfrey Show, and The View.

What’s the Book About?

This book is all about looking young and trendy. The author isn’t interested in aging gracefully or celebrating wrinkles but also doesn’t want to overdo it with cosmetic procedures. Instead, she provides detailed advice on how to achieve a youthful and modern appearance, aiming to make you look 10 years younger. The book’s playful tone makes it easy to read, with a layout that highlights key points for quick browsing.

The recurring phrase “Nothing Ages You Like…” kicks off almost every chapter, providing immediate insight into what to avoid. For instance, here are some examples:

Hair: Avoid too short bangs, very long hair parted in the middle, helmet head, high hair, updos, visibly thinning hair, overly dark hair, solid hair color, gray hair, gray roots, and ashy blond streaks.

Wardrobe: Steer clear of overly matching outfits, dressing head-to-toe in one designer, trying too hard, not trying at all, and wearing clothes that are too young.

Skirts: Avoid skirts that are too long, too short, too tight, too wide, too baggy, the wrong shape, or worn with the wrong shoes.

Shoes: Stay away from ugly orthopedic shoes, wearing gym sneakers outside the gym, boring classic pumps, shoes you can’t walk in, outdated shoes, and overly sensible shoes.

She also shares her “nothing ages you like” tips on brows, glasses, eyeliner, foundation, wrinkles, lipstick, teeth, nails, jeans, evening wear, shapewear, legs, and tights. Each chapter goes into detail about what to avoid and offers practical advice, often accompanied by pictures or illustrations. The book covers everything from cosmetic procedures to makeup application and choosing the right clothes.

Conclusion

I found this book handy and easy to navigate. It’s simple to locate topics you’re interested in, read the main points, and delve deeper if needed. The advice is reliable and offers various options based on how much maintenance you prefer, making it suitable for everyone. The “Nothing ages you like…” lists and top 10 tips are both informative and fun.
