Facing the Intense 52-Degree Heat of Death Valley in a Purple Dress

I haven’t yet shared about the incredible landscapes of Utah and Arizona (coming this Wednesday), but let’s skip ahead to one of the world’s most stunning parks: Death Valley.

Words can’t truly capture the beauty of this place, so I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking. It was a perfect chance for a photo shoot. I only had one outfit—a purple dress—which actually worked well with the amazing scenery. Here I am in front of the “Artist’s Palette.”

This dress was a thrift find from a store in The Netherlands. It’s a bit different from my usual style, with more patterns and a girly vibe, but I love the purple color and its slightly graphic pattern. Even though it was a risky buy, the low price made it worthwhile. It’s good to step out of your comfort zone and try new things occasionally. That’s one of the great benefits of shopping at thrift stores for me.

Death Valley is famous for being one of the hottest places on earth. Its Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level. The valley stretches north to south between the Amargosa Range on the east and the Panamint Range on the west, with the Sylvania Mountains and the Owlshead Mountains marking its northern and southern edges. Because it’s so low, the heat gets trapped, and temperatures can soar up to 134°F (57°C).

At the visitor center, it was incredibly hot, but we recorded a temperature of 122°F in other parts of the valley. Surprisingly, there’s still a small pool of water to be found, though most of the area is extremely hot and dry. Some sections resemble a classic desert with lots of sand and the occasional cactus, while others are rugged.

Driving through the valley is beautifully breathtaking, and you’ll find yourself stopping frequently to take pictures. Death Valley was one of the many natural wonders we experienced on this trip, and even posing in the intense heat was a memorable adventure.
