Today, I’m excited to share an article from Delilah, who will be writing more often for 40+Style on plus size topics. If you want to get to know her better, check out her style interview.
As a plus-size woman, I often get stopped by others who say, “You look great, but I could never pull that off.” I always respond with, “Oh, but you can!”
The fashion industry has long dictated how women should dress to achieve the perfect look. For plus-size women, the general advice often includes avoiding large prints, bright colors, horizontal stripes, body-conscious clothing, white items, sleeveless blouses, and more. The message used to be about hiding under oversized, shapeless garments and sticking to a mostly black wardrobe.
Personally, I love expressing myself through clothing, and my only rules are to wear clothes that fit well and suit the body I have now. I know my body type (an inverted triangle) and which silhouettes flatter me most, like A-line skirts and dresses, full-leg trousers, and jeans. Still, I also wear outfits others might say don’t suit my shape, such as skinny jeans, pencil skirts, and shift dresses.

I believe it’s time to break free from “plus-size fashion rules” because it opens up a world of fashion possibilities. Everyone deserves to look and feel fabulous, confident, and stylish, no matter their size.
Here’s how I break the rules:
– Horizontal stripes and bright colors are said to be a plus size woman’s worst enemy.
– It’s commonly believed that wearing white highlights problem areas.
– Bold prints are often considered a fashion no-no.
– Denim is thought to emphasize problem areas.
– Plus-size women are usually advised to avoid colors and prints.
Do you break any rules for your body type?
