Shapewear: Is It Essential for Women Over 40?

I understand that shapewear can be a bit of a hot topic, but I want to share my perspective on it. Let’s be real, once we hit 40, weight tends to settle in less-than-ideal spots and our skin isn’t as firm as it once was. You might think I’m not the best person to talk about this since I’m still relatively slim, but I have my own problem areas too. I do wear shapewear sometimes, especially under tight skirts and dresses.

Why I Sometimes Wear Shapewear:
Some people believe we shouldn’t wear any restrictive clothing and should just embrace our natural selves. I get that. But when we’re heading out or attending special events, we often want to look our best because it helps us feel our best.

Here are my reasons for wearing shapewear:
– Tight and light dresses don’t look great when my thighs and butt show through.
– It smooths out my figure nicely, controlling love handles and smoothing legs.
– It can highlight my waist more.
– If weight is a concern, shapewear can give a slimming effect.
– It’s also a handy tool to help you appear taller and slimmer.

Different Types and Comfort Levels of Shapewear:
Not all shapewear is uncomfortable! Many stores offer different levels of support, from light to full. For example, Spanx has various shapewear options:

1. Mid-thigh shaper: Great for upper thigh problem areas, usually in light to medium support.
2. Hi-waist mid-thigh shaper: Perfect for more waist definition.
3. Spanx simplicity half slip: Ideal under skirts and dresses.

Shapewear can be a bit confusing, so here’s a quick guide to 7 types and their uses:
– Control Camis: Smooth out your belly and bust, avoiding lumps around the bra.
– Control Tights: Perfect for colder weather, they shape your tummy and legs.
– Corsets: Target your waist without the need for control pants or a cami.
– Body Suits: Offer control over the bust and tummy, with longer versions for thigh coverage.
– Singlets: Open-bust body shapers that let you wear your own bra.
– Control Pants: A less restrictive option that controls the tummy and waist.
– Half Slips: Work under skirts to avoid visible panty lines (VPL) and provide tummy control.

I don’t wear shapewear all the time and not to appear thinner. For me, it’s mainly about smoothing out my upper legs and buttocks so I feel more confident in my tight skirts and dresses. What’s your take on shapewear? Do you wear it or steer clear?
