Must Your Clothes Always Enhance Your Figure?

During a recent blogger meet-up, I got some feedback from Suzanne and Anja. They mentioned that they often miss seeing my body shape in my outfits and would love to see me wearing clothes that highlight my waist more.

I’m all for wearing styles that make you feel good about your body and emphasizing your favorite parts. It’s a big part of my style advice and the articles I write.

However, since I’m generally happy with my body, I don’t always feel the need to highlight the traditionally “good” parts. I feel confident and sexy without showcasing them. I aim for an outfit that looks good rather than always going for the most flattering option.

Creating Pleasing Silhouettes

I enjoy experimenting with different silhouettes. I like to mix things up with draped fabrics, straight lines, asymmetry, A-lines, loose tops, longer skirts, and cropped pants. Thanks to my mainly rectangular shape, I can pull off a variety of styles.

I still follow the basic “rules of flattery” most of the time. For example, I’ll pair tight pieces with something loose. If I’m covering my legs, I might show my arms. If an outfit seems too overwhelming, I might add a belt to break it up.

Following Your Style Persona

Would I look more traditionally flattering and sexy with tighter tops, body-hugging dresses, and emphasizing my waist? Sure. And sometimes, I do dress that way if I’m in the mood or the occasion calls for it.

But that bombshell look with tight clothes isn’t my regular style. My style focuses on fun, comfort, asymmetrical lines, unique shapes, natural fabrics, and geometric designs. I avoid showing cleavage. If I wear a low-cut top, I balance the look by covering my legs more. Comfort is key for me, so I avoid tight skirts that restrict movement and always choose elastin skirts. I don’t wear shoes I can’t walk in.

While I do wear waisted looks occasionally, I find them less comfortable in Singapore’s warm climate. So, I often opt for outfits that don’t emphasize the waist. But I do enjoy waisted looks and wear them regularly, just not always.

Your Style Is Personal

At the end of the day, style is personal. You should dress in a way that makes you feel good. Wear clothes that you find comfortable and sexy. For some, that might mean highlighting a generous bust, a small waist, or sexy legs. For others, it might mean dressing in a more artistic way and not emphasizing the waist.

If you want to see more of my latest outfits, check out the “what I wore” section on my site. In my view, the goal should be to feel good in your clothes rather than aiming for the most flattering look.

What do you think about this? Do you always dress to flatter your body? Is looking sexy a priority for you?
