I like spending money on clothes, but I rarely go all out. I usually stick to affordable brands and look for sales to buy pricier items. If I decide to splurge on something expensive, it’s usually because there’s a special occasion that justifies it. Generally, I buy things I genuinely like, and I’m fortunate not to have a strong desire for diamond rings or high-end designer labels like Prada. Although I might like some Prada pieces, I feel their prices are too high for what they are.
What one person considers not splurging might seem excessive to someone who shops mainly at thrift stores or buys clothes only a few times a year. It’s all very subjective. When I say I don’t splurge, I compare myself to friends who spend much more on clothes. However, I know there are many people, including my husband, who spend a lot less on clothing and accessories.
It’s all about finding a personal balance, influenced by our income levels and beliefs about how much we should spend on clothes. Is spending a lot on clothes worth it? Does it make me happier, or am I just indulging another need?
To control my spending, I take a good look at what I already have before buying anything new. I ask myself if I have similar items, if I really need it, and how it would add to my wardrobe. I also try to wear my nicest clothes when shopping and only buy new things that are nicer than what I’m already wearing.
In life, it’s about finding the right balance. I believe it’s important to invest in yourself and have a wonderful wardrobe because feeling good about how you look contributes to overall happiness. However, I don’t believe in spending just for the sake of it. Fashion spending should be thoughtful and planned.
While there’s a time and place for spontaneous buys, it shouldn’t become a habit. Personally, I probably buy more than I need. I partly justify it because I’m in the fashion industry and stay within my means. I know that clothes and my appearance are important to me—it’s just who I am. I enjoy having something new and trendy regularly, but I also need to control myself. Sometimes, I can admire something without buying it, like a unique necklace design.
What are your thoughts on this? Are you someone who saves money or likes to spend big? Do you think spending a lot on clothes is indulgent? Do you always buy what you really like? I’d love to hear how you handle this topic. What kind of shopper are you?
