Transforming Simplicity: Enhancing the Appeal of The Grey Dress

I’ve always been a fan of dropped waist dresses, even though they can be a bit risky for me since they tend to lengthen my already long upper body compared to my legs. However, I feel I can pull off the look by wearing heels. My height helps make this style work, and I love that these dresses are comfortable and not tight around the waist.

I bought this particular dress almost two years ago from a surprising little shop I found in my hometown of Nijmegen. It was designed by Hue Tran and immediately caught my eye with its well-crafted top, fun back detail (which I forgot to photograph), and just-right length that hits right above the knee.

Still, I wouldn’t say this dress has been a complete success. I’ve moved past my grey phase and now lean more towards black and white or more colorful outfits. Women over 40, including myself, often look better with a splash of color or contrast. I feel this dress would pop more with a colorful or white jacket. I’d probably wear it more often if I lived in a cooler climate where I could pair it with contrasting jackets and stylish boots. But, as you know, Singapore is incredibly hot, so those options aren’t practical here. So, I need to find another way to add some flair to the rather dull grey.

I found a good solution by pairing the dress with red and white accessories, like a red and white belt, a red watch, necklace, and shoes. Grey is great for matching with a variety of other colors, like orange. This approach still keeps the outfit simple, which suits my style, but adds enough contrast to make it look interesting and flattering.

This dress is a great basic piece, and I’m sure I’ll continue to wear it for a long time.
